AUTHORSHIP & INTERACTION
LONDON RIOTS
More than 1,500 people have been convicted of crimes relating to the riots in English cities last summer.
Statistics published by the Ministry of Justice show offenders were three times more likely to be jailed by magistrates than other criminals.
The average length of all sentences was longer than for other crimes at just over 14 months.
INFOGRAPHICS
UK riots distance mapped in Manchester: ITO World help us map possible routes from home to riots.
Mapping the riots with poverty. Interactive map of poverty and suspects addresses.
In this task we were split into groups of five, the group tasks was to use the Guardian's statistics of the 2011 UK Riots. We were limitied to only using coloured threads, paper and the studio walls to represent the data.
Initially we started of analysing the info-graphics presented by the Guardian. Some seemed to work better than other in my opinion. The info-graphics on the right seemed to be my favourite one, this was because of its clarity and how useful it actually is. It explains the Cause of the riots, the chances of it happening again. It also tackles the issue of stop and search, it also explains integration between society.

I have always found pie charts useful this one especially (on the left). This is because the audience are able to pick up facts straight away. Making it interactive on the website also helps visually and statistically.
THE TASK
Our group came to the conclusion that we would show how youths may have been the central target from the media. Following this we thought we would see how it had an impact on the act of Police. This also seemed to coincide with the reactions of the public therefore we linked all three together to show this 'triangular' effect.
Receiving our feedback helped us discover that the graph lacked differentiation from each section. It is vital for the visual communication to be clear as you do not want the audience to feel confused when viewing these informational graphs.
INDIVIDUAL

WORK

Immediately after this group work, we all individually looked at infographics, I wanted to experiment with types of graphs im not comfortable using, just to get out of my comfort zone.I created these info graphic graphs, they are both related to the amount of conviction. The graph on the right deals with the UK as a whole, this graph represents the amounts of people arrested during the riots.
I found this useful as this workshop allowed me to tighten up on my data gathering skills. It had been a while since I had to use statistical information and represent it. I enjoy this side of the course and it is a big interest for me since studying at Westminster University.
